Combination Star

Quilting is a craft that holds importance in many communities around the world, one of those being the midwestern United States. These works of art are labors of love, that can sometimes take over a year to complete. From quilt competitions at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, to barn quilts on the highway, and as close to home as your grandmother's living room, the motif is everywhere, and holds great importance when reflecting on where I grew up.

The combination star quilt block pattern was expanded upon for this project as a symbol of the Midwest to illustrate Iowa's diverse cultural and physical landscape. The Midwest is an accumulation of mixed traditions and heritage, made up by indigenous nations, American and European colonists that arrived in the 17th through 19th century, and ongoing immigration from all over the globe. Iowa's industry, agriculture, and sense of community draw people in and bring people together.

The colors were chosen to mimic the vivid landscape, with green representing nature, blue representing our waterways, and red representing barns, as a nod to Iowa's agricultural significance.
